Community Outreach
Southern’s mission statement calls for service. Community outreach allows students,
the department, and the university as a whole to reach out and establish valuable
links with the surrounding community. Since 2003, individuals taking Spanish language
courses have dedicated a minimum of 10 hours of their time to a community service
project and then have written a report about their experience. Becoming involved has
given students the opportunity to practice language outside of the classroom setting.
Since fall 2008, service has been an integral element of every language course offered,
not just the Spanish courses. Students have volunteered at local chapters of organizations
such as Habitat for Humanity and United Way. We hope it will be a rewarding experience
both for those serving and those being served as students fulfill their mission of
service in the greater Chattanooga area.
