STUDENT LANDS A JOB AT QSTRATEGIES AFTER A INTERNSHIP

Growing a Career in Chattanooga: Shaina Rantung, Public Relations | Alumni Voices

Shaina Rantung graduated from Southern Adventist University’s School of Journalism and Communications (SJC) in 2017. The professional experience she obtained while still a student helped her secure a job in her field directly after college.

As part of a course requirement, Rantung needed to complete a 300-hour internship. During her search, she stumbled upon Q Strategies, a Chattanooga-based public relations firm in need of a summer intern. The senior public relations major applied, interviewed, and landed the position.

This experience opened her eyes to the opportunities a mid-sized-city offers to young professionals, specifically for networking and relationship building.

Rantung credits the School of Journalism and Communication with providing the skills necessary to become an indispensable intern. “I love how I can use my words and writing skills to create change and express myself,” she said. “[While at Southern] I always got great feedback from my professors. They all are brilliant people who left great careers in order to teach.”

During her internship at Q Strategies, Rantung observed the importance of her boss’s involvement with other businesses in Chattanooga. This commitment to networking and building relationships in the professional community reinforced what Southern’s professors taught in the classroom.

After completing her internship and graduating from Southern, Q Strategies offered Rantung a position as an assistant account executive. She is enjoying the opportunities Chattanooga offers to young professionals and encourages upcoming graduates to seek job openings in this growing, thriving city.
