Southern’s School of Nursing Excels

nursing students in the skills lab
The School of Nursing at Southern Adventist University excels in providing students with the knowledge, skills, and practical application they need to succeed in their nursing careers.

Graduates achieved a 100% first-time NCLEX-RN pass rate for the December 2023 and May 2024 AS, and May 2024 pre-licensure BSN nursing cohorts who have taken the NCLEX-RN. In addition, Southern’s graduate-level nursing students also achieved a 100% pass rate on nurse practitioner certification exams for the December 2023 and May 2024 graduate nursing cohorts.

“We have an outstanding faculty team who set students up for success,” says Holly Gadd, PhD, dean of Southern’s School of Nursing. “We are proud of our dedicated students who go out and make a difference in the world!”

Southern strives to provide a quality environment where students can practice their skills in preparation for situations they will face in the workplace. In the skills lab, undergraduate students use manikins to practice a variety of tasks, including checking vital signs, inserting a nasal gastric tube, and changing the dressing on a wound. Southern’s School of Nursing was the first nursing school, and only the second healthcare program in the United States, to utilize the R42 Bariatric Manikin, which was released in 2024. The bariatric manikin provides nursing students with needed experience as they care for patients with large body types.

“Our goal is always to simulate reality as much as we can,” explains Kerry Allen, associate professor and skills lab coordinator in the School of Nursing. “We want students to interact with manikins that mimic what they’re going to see in a hospital setting.”

Plans are also underway for a new simulation lab on Southern’s campus through a remodel of Miller Hall. This will create an expanded space where nursing students will be able to more effectively gain hands-on practice, engage in multiple simulations involving teamwork and collaboration, and participate in situations that will prepare them for real-world scenarios.
