Boardtree Falls (30’)

Boardtree Branch empties into Firescald Creek downstream of the falls, and the combined stream then flows into Big Creek.

I filmed this in 2017 and have just now put the video together. Savage Gulf State Natural Area is a true sanctuary, rich with natural wonders. Once you hike a few miles from the trailheads, you'll discover a sense of solitude. I (Dr. Ben Thornton, Southern Arboretum Director) prefer to visit when it's cold—the colder, the better—because no one else will be on the trails. This video features Broad Tree Falls, which is part of a loop trail that also includes Greeter Falls. In a previous video, I shared footage of a lesser-known waterfall located just below Broad Tree Falls, which has no designated trail leading to it. Filming Broad Tree Falls was quite challenging due to the numerous trees stretching into the gap created by the falls, all in search of sunlight. On the day I filmed, it had snowed, leaving no tracks in the snow except for my own. I wish I had someone walk across the suspension bridge while I was filming, as it would have added to the scene. Please enjoy the solitude. Dim the lights, turn up the music, and allow yourself to be immersed in the experience.
