Southern Sophomore Success

Southern Sophomore Success Program launched in the fall semester of 2018-2019 helps
students discover what God calls them to do in life. It is one of the most important
privileges of Southern's faculty and staff to mentor students to find their true passion
and connect it to God's calling. Students who find their calling have increased meaning
and satisfaction in their future vocation (Dik, 2012). Undergraduate mentoring along
with experiential learning while in service to others along with internships and shadowing
help students with this discovery (Clydesdale, 2015, p. 69). Sophomores are at a higher
risk than freshmen for dropping out of college, and mentoring is important for these
second-year students (Ennis-McMillan, 2011 and Clydesdale, 2015, pp.70-76).
Southern's mentoring program helps students to:
- recognize how and from where calling originates;
- find meaning in their calling and thus encourage them to continue their training; and
- evaluate how their choice of vocation adds to the greater good of society.
The program consists of the monthly mentoring lunches with inspiring presenters for sophomores, faculty, and staff to discuss and share experiences related to finding their Calling, Career, and Vocation. Program participants take Clifton StrengthsQuest Assessment to find out their strengths, and they are provided with detailed instructions on how to utilize their identified strengths. Additionally, guidance is provided on how to create a winning resumé and find some valuable shadowing opportunities.
