GC A1 Geologic Column--Introduction

What is the geologic column?  Where is it located?  Why is it important?

  • A non-narrated version of the PowerPoint and a script are provided for teachers who would find them useful for presenting the material to their students.

  • Geologic column templates that can be printed, cut apart, and reassembled to practice the names of the intervals of the geologic column.
GC A2 Geologic Column--Some Definitions

Introduction to some important terminology that will make it easier to learn more about the Geologic Column

  • A non-narrated version of the Power-Point and a script are provided for teachers who would find them useful for presenting the material to their students.
GC A3 Geologic Column--Relative Dating

Introduces the difference between data and interpretation.  Explains relative age (lower layers of the Geologic Column were laid down before the upper layers).  Shows how the names Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic reflect the idea of relative age.  Consider completing the interactivities in the box below  with your class before showing GC B3.

  • A non-narrated version of the PowerPoint and a script are provided for teachers who would find them useful for presenting the material to their students.
  • Two simple, interactive activities--which require little or no prior preparation--help students learn the meaning of relative dating (relative age).  Consider completing these activities with your class before watching GC B3--Relative Dating.
GC A4 Geologic Column--How Did the Layers Form?

Describes how rock layers are deposited horizontally.  Shows several widespread formations that cover multiple states.  Explains how horizontal rock layers may be thrust up or bent later due to the activity of earth's tectonic plates.  Explains that these layers--the horizontal ones, the widespread ones, and the uplifted or bent ones--are data.  Suggests that the worldwide flood can help us understand this data.
